The Turkish, film Dondurmam Gaymak (Ice Cream, I Scream) has been honoured with two awards of Best; Comedy and Best Director at the New York Queens Film Festival. Ice Cream, I Scream tells the story of an ice cream salesman in Mugla, trying to survive in the face of fierce competition from the big ice cream brands. The film is directed by Turkish director Yuksel Aksu. The familiar summer refrain on the streets of Bodrum and other Aegean resort towns has been framed in lights in New York. ‘Dondurmam Gaymak’as it is titled in Turkish, was chosen as the opening night film and. screened at the Museum of the Moving Image on 15 November. The film was selected as Turkey’s nominee to run for the best foreign film Oscar.
Competing with entries from. around the world for a place among the final nominees to be named by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in January 2007. The young director Yiiksel Aksu said, he believed that the film’s.chances of receiving an Academy Award were high, since film circles praised the film during this year’s Istanbul international Film Festival where it also won the jury’s Special Prize. ‘I think nowadays the world needs naivete; it needs things that are pure and realistic. The actors in my movie are Mugla residents. They weren’t even amateur actors.’ he explained. The film is running this week in the OASIS cinema with English subtitles – a must to see
